The Wildland Fire Needs Information Workshop was held on November 4 & 5, 2001 at the University of Montana in Missoula to gather data to aid in the establishment of the requirements of the User community for information products as part of wildland and wildfire management. The Workshop was part of the Forest Fire Imaging Experimental System (FIRES), a NASA-sponsored research project investigating the fundamental science behind wildland fires and establishing the feasibility of observing fires from remote platforms. Rochester Institute of Technology's Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science is leading this three-year project.

The following questions were asked of the Participants in the breakout sessions:

November 5, Breakout Session 1
Discussion of the problems faced in wildfire management today and what tools are available to the fire manager.
1. Participants were asked to identify three problems/challenges in wildland fire management, by order of importance;
2. Participants were asked to identify three additional problems/challenges in wildland fire management, again, by order of importance;
3. Participants were asked to identify the top three tools, in order of importance, available to them today;
4. Participants were asked to identify the tools (no more than three) they are forced to use, or have observed others using, that are ineffective.

November 5, Breakout Session 2

Discussion of future capabilities that would aid in the management of wildland fires with specific emphasis on remote sensing and information technology.

5. Participants were asked to identify the top three capabilities they would like to have in the future;
6. Participants were asked to identify the top three remote sensing or information technology capabilities they would like to see in the future.

The data gathered at the sessions was entered into an Excel spreadsheet. Participants' personal data is not included in the spreadsheet. Instead, numeric codes were assigned. In order to present the data in a sorted fashion, key words were assigned to the answers given by the Participants. This key word sorting should be understood to be the interpretation of one person. The raw data is being provided for use by the wildland fire community to allow users to further interrogate the results of the Workshop and generate their own results. Questions regarding the Workshop data or report should be addressed to Anthony Vodacek, vodacek@cis.rit.edu , 585-475-7816.
